Bassett portrayed voodoo priestess Marie Laveau on season three, Coven, and went on to play three-breasted woman Desiree Dupree on season four, Freak Show.

Fellow alums Sarah Paulson, Kathy Bates, Evan Peters, Chloe Sevigny, Wes Bentley and Matt Bomer will also star on season five. Jessica Lange will not return, but Lady Gaga and Cheyenne Jackson have joined the program.

International Business Times released a cast list last week which included previously unannounced stars Michelle Pfeiffer, Alexander Skarsgard, Tammy Blanchard and Donald Sutherland. American Horror Story: Hotel is slated to premiere in October.

Bassett is known for such films as What's Love Got to Do With It, How Stella Got Her Groove Back and Akeelah and the Bee. The actress also portrayed CIA director Hayden Chase on ABC series Alias and Dr. Cate Banfield on NBC medical drama E.R.
