LONDON, April 6 (UPI) -- A week after ITV confirmed reports that Downton Abbey's sixth and current season would be its last, the show's creator Julian Fellowes has hinted at the possibility of a sequel.

Fellowes told British newspaper The Sun via The Telegraph the continuation would focus on New York high society families in the late 19th century.

"Robert Grantham would be in his early teens, Cora would be a child. A young Violet could make an appearance," he said.

Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham, is played by Dame Maggie Smith in the period drama, while Roberth Grantham, Earl of Grantham, and Cora Crawley, Countess of Graham, are portrayed by Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern.

Fellowes said last month he was "grateful" to "have been allowed [the] unique experience" that was working on the show.

The series, which is set in England in the early 20th century, airs first on ITV in the United Kingdom and then on PBS in the United States.
