Melissa Benoist to play Supergirl in CBS pilot

Benoist, 26, is best known for her work in TV's "Glee" and the Oscar-nominated film "Whiplash."

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 22 (UPI) -- Melissa Benoist has been cast as the titular heroine in CBS' Supergirl pilot.

Benoist, 26, is best known for her work in TV's Glee and the film Whiplash.

"I wish there was a superhero emoji," she tweeted Thursday after the Supergirl casting news broke. "But seriously, sans emoji... I AM SO EXCITED !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! #Supergirl."
