CBS sets date for 'Late Show with David Letterman' finale

Stephen Colbert is taking over the program from the retiring talk-show icon this spring.

NEW YORK, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- David Letterman is to host his final broadcast of Late Show May 20, CBS announced Wednesday.

"David Letterman has given to all of us a remarkable legacy of achievement and creative brilliance that will never be forgotten," Leslie Moonves, president and chief executive officer of the CBS Corp., said in a statement. "It's going to be tough to say goodbye, but I know we will all cherish the shows leading up to Dave's final broadcast in May."

As of May 20, Letterman will have hosted 6,028 total episodes of both Late Night on NBC and the Late Show on CBS.

Stephen Colbert is taking over for the departing talk-show icon this spring.
