LOS ANGELES, Nov. 10 (UPI) -- Bruce Campbell will reprise Ash Williams in television series Ash vs. Evil Dead on Starz.
The 56-year-old actor first portrayed the character in The Evil Dead (1981), and returned for Evil Dead II (1987) and Army of Darkness (1992). The series will see Campbell reunite with director Sam Raimi and producer Robert Tapert, who will co-executive produce the program.
"I'm really excited to bring this series to the Evil Dead fans worldwide," Campbell said in a statement. "It's going to be everything they have been clamoring for: serious Deadite ass-kicking and plenty of outrageous humor."
Ash vs. Evil Dead will see an aging Ash confront a Deadite plague that threatens to destroy mankind. Season one will consist of 10 half-hour episodes, and is slated to premiere in 2015. Raimi will the direct the pilot, which he co-wrote with brother Ivan Raimi and Tom Spezialy.
"Evil Dead has always been a blast," the director declared. "Bruce, Rob and I are thrilled to have the opportunity to tell the next chapter in Ash's lame, but heroic saga. With his chainsaw arm and his 'boomstick,' Ash is back to kick some monster butt. And brother, this time there's a truckload of it."
The Evil Dead trilogy of films earned an estimated $34 million at the box office, and inspired successful rock musical Evil Dead: The Musical. Raimi produced a Fede Alvarez-directed remake/reboot of The Evil Dead in 2013 that grossed nearly $100 million at the box office.
Campbell last appeared as Dr. Ashford N. Simpson on USA Network series Psych, and is scheduled for The Escort and Welcome to Purgatory. Raimi has also directed the Toby Maguire-led Spider-Man films, Drag Me to Hell and Oz the Great and Powerful.
