The Mysteries of Laura stars Debra Messing as title character Laura Diamond, an NYPD homicide detective and single mother to two young sons. The program follows Diamond as she balances her job with parenthood, and contends with her ex-husband, Jake Broderick (Josh Lucas), who is made her superior at work.

"Debra has effortlessly infused Laura with a relatability that is captivating audiences," NBC president Jennifer Salke lauded. "We can't wait to see how Laura will continue to evolve throughout the entire season."

Messing came to fame as Grace Adler on NBC sitcom Will & Grace, and subsequently starred on USA series The Starter Wife and NBC musical drama Smash. The actress dated her Smash co-star, Will Chase, for two-and-a-half years, but the couple broke up this week.

The Mysteries of Laura airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
