SAN DIEGO, Aug. 6 (UPI) -- Actress Kathy Bates said it took her hours to fall asleep the night after she filmed her first scene for the fourth season of American Horror Story.

The subtitle for the upcoming season of the FX series is Freak Show, a nod to its setting in a 1950s carnival.

In her second season on the show, Bates plays a character named Effil Darling, though there's no word on what sort of character she'll play.

Whatever it is, it must be pretty scary. She told TV Line she had trouble sleeping after shooting her first scene.

"After my first scene last week — and this is a terrible confession to make — I couldn't sleep until six in the morning, and then I slept for 30 hours," she said. "And that was without drugs, I swear to God. I think [Ryan Murphy] scares the [expletive] out of me."

Other character names were revealed Saturday at Comic-Con San Diego.

Returning cast members include Emma Roberts as Maggie, Sarah Paulson as the two-headed Bette and Dot Tattler, Angela Bassett as Desiree Dupre, Evan Peters as Jimmy Darling, and Jessica Lange as Elsa Mars. Newcomers include Michael Chiklis as Wendell del Tolito and John Carroll Lynch as an unnamed monster-type character.
