LOS ANGELES, July 24 (UPI) -- Finn Wittrock has been cast in American Horror Story: Freak Show.

The 29-year-old actor is best known for his role as Damon Miller on All My Children. Wittrock starred on the program from 2009 to 2011, and has also appeared in movies Winter's Tale and Noah. American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy announced the casting Thursday on Twitter.

"Thrilled to announce the very talented FINN WITTROCK has joined the cast of Freak Show!" he wrote. Murphy and Wittrock previously collaborated on HBO movie The Normal Heart, and the actor's role in Freak Show is currently unknown.

Wittrock joins Jessica Lange as freak show manager Elsa Mars, Michael Chiklis as a strongman performer, Angela Bassett as his current wife, Kathy Bates as his ex-wife Ethel Darling, Evan Peters as their son Jimmy Darling, Sarah Paulson as conjoined twins Dot and Bette, Denis O'Hare as Elsa's rival and Frances Conroy, Jamie Brewer, Emma Roberts and Gabourey Sidibe in unspecified roles. An unconfirmed cast list also suggests Naomi Grossman will reprise her season two role as Pepper.

The new season is set in Jupiter, Fla., in 1950, and FX CEO John Landgraf told reporters this week it will be darker than its predecessor, Coven.

"Some years it's going to be big and bright and brash and campy the way Coven is," he shared. "Other years it's going to be dark and brooding like Asylum was. I guess I would put Freak Show halfway in between the two. It's not quite as brooding and formal and Hitchcockian as Asylum, it's got a little bit more humor and a little bit more camp, but it's got a brooding period feel to it also."

American Horror Story: Freak Show premieres on FX in October.
