LONDON, Feb. 24 (UPI) -- Samuel Anderson is joining the cast of the iconic British science-fiction series "Doctor Who," the BBC announced.
Best known for his role in the London stage production and subsequent film adaptation of "The History Boys," Anderson will play Danny Pink, a school teacher and companion to Clara Oswald, played by Jenna Coleman, in "Doctor Who."
Peter Capaldi has replaced outgoing star Matt Smith as the titular time-traveler for Season 8.
"I was so excited to join 'Doctor Who,' I wanted to jump and click my heels but I was scared I might not come down before filming started," Anderson said in a statement. "It's a quintessential part of British culture and I can't believe I'm part of it. It's an honor to be able to work alongside Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman and I can't wait to show people how my character becomes involved with such a fantastic duo."
Anderson has also co-starred in the sitcom "Gavin & Stacey," and the soap opera "Emmerdale."
