LOS ANGELES, Jan. 13 (UPI) -- Hollywood's E! News has apologized for its much-criticized Golden Globes "fun fact" screen crawler about Michael J. Fox's diagnosis with Parkinson's disease.

The blurb appeared on television screens when Fox was interviewed on the Globes red carpet during the cable network's pre-show coverage Sunday.

Under the heading of "fun fact," the message said, "Michael J. Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1991."

After fans criticized the message, E! News issued an apology to the Hollywood Reporter.

"We regret the insensitive classification of Michael J. Fox's Parkinson's diagnosis during our Eonline [sic] live stream," the statement said. "We understand the serious nature of the disease and sincerely apologize."
