'Boardwalk Empire' to wrap up next season

NEW YORK, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- The upcoming fifth season of "Boardwalk Empire" will be the 1920s New Jersey-set crime drama's last, HBO announced.

"It has been an incredible honor to bring this powerful and groundbreaking series to our subscribers," Michael Lombardo, president of programming at HBO, said at the Television Critics Association press tour in Pasadena Thursday, adding series writer-producer Terry Winter "has created one for the ages."

"We're thrilled to get the go-ahead for a fifth season of 'Boardwalk Empire,'" Winter said. "After much discussion with my creative team and HBO, we've decided to wrap up the series after such a great run and look forward to bringing it to a powerful and exciting conclusion."

The show stars Steve Buscemi, Shea Whigham, Kelly Macdonald and Michael Shannon.
