Frears, Mamet, Soderbergh, Fincher up for DGA Awards

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Stephen Frears, David Mamet and Nelson McCormick were nominated Thursday for the Directors Guild of America Award for Best TV Movie or Miniseries.

Also competing in the category are Steven Soderbergh and Beth McCarthy-Miller.

Frears is nominated for helming "Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight" while Mamet is nominated for "Phil Spector," McCarthy-Miller for "The Sound of Music Live!," McCormick for "Killing Kennedy" and Soderbergh for "Behind the Candelabra."

Up for the DGA prize for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in a Dramatic Series are Bryan Cranston for an episode of "Breaking Bad," David Fincher for an installment of "House of Cards," Vince Gilligan for "Breaking Bad," Lesli Linka Glatter for "Homeland" and David Nutter for "Game of Thrones."

In the running for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Comedy Series are Mark Cendrowski for an episode of "The Big Bang Theory," Bryan Cranston for "Modern Family," Gail Mancuso for "Modern Family," McCarthy-Miller for "30 Rock" and Anthony Rich for "The Big Bang Theory."

"When I hear all this talk of the 'Golden Age of Television,' I look at these nominees and beg to differ -- I think we've entered a 'Platinum Age' in every genre from drama to comedy, to commercials to long-form," Directors Guild of America President Paris Barclay said in a statement Thursday.

Winners will be announced at the 66th annual DGA Awards dinner Jan. 25 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Los Angeles. Jane Lynch is to serve as emcee of the event.
