Teresa Giudice, husband Joe, each released on $500K bail

NEWARK, N.J., July 31 (UPI) -- Teresa Giudice and her husband Joe were each released on $500,000 bond after being indicted on federal fraud charges in New Jersey, officials said.

The couple are stars of the reality TV show "The Real Housewives of New Jersey."

The New York Daily News said they made their first appearance in Newark federal court Tuesday and answered, "yes," when asked if they understood the charges against them.

Neither entered a plea, the newspaper said, adding the pair turned in their passports and agreed to limit their travels to New Jersey and New York as part of their bond contract.

The Giudices are due back in court Aug. 14.

U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman announced the couple was charged Monday in an alleged conspiracy to defraud lenders and illegally obtain mortgages and other loans, as well as allegedly hiding assets and income during a bankruptcy case.

"The indictment returned today alleges the Giudices lied to the bankruptcy court, to the IRS and to a number of banks," Fishman said in a statement. "Everyone has an obligation to tell the truth when dealing with the courts, paying their taxes and applying for loans or mortgages. That's reality."
