LOS ANGELES, July 4 (UPI) -- Iconic American TV shows "Saved by the Bell," "Miami Vice" and "Punky Brewster" are being revived as digital comic books, Variety reported.

The shows from the 1980s and '90s are getting a new lease on life thanks to an agreement between NBCUniversal and publisher Lion Forge Comics.

Other series being adapted as comic books this year include "Airwolf" and "Knight Rider."

"Partnering with the team at Lion Forge to bring classic TV properties to life in graphic novel format was a natural step for us as we continue to identify new ways to entertain our fans in the digital space," Chris Lucero, director of Global Consumer Products Licensing for NBCUniversal Television, said in a statement Wednesday. "We're excited to give fans a chance to revisit some of their favorite shows and characters in a completely new way."

Variety said the first comics will be released later this year through the Amazon Kindle Bookstore, Apple iBooks, Barnes & Noble's Nook Book Store and Kobo.
