Stephen Fry says he attempted suicide last year

LONDON, June 6 (UPI) -- British actor, writer and TV presenter Stephen Fry revealed this week he attempted suicide by ingesting a "huge" amount of pills and vodka last year.

"I took a huge number of pills and a huge [amount] of vodka," Fry said in an interview for Richard Herring's Leicester Square Theatre podcast.

Fry, who has bipolar disorder and has publicly discussed earlier suicide attempts, said he tried to take his own life last year when he was in a hotel room after shooting scenes for the BBC documentary "Stephen Fry -- Out There," in which he confronts anti-gay campaigners in Russia and Uganda.

He said the mixture of drugs and alcohol "made my body convulse so much that I broke four ribs."

"It was a close-run thing," he said. "Fortunately, the producer I was filming with at the time came into the hotel room and I was found in a sort of unconscious state and taken back to England and looked after."

He went on to describe himself as "the victim of my own moods.

"More than most people are perhaps, in as much as I have a condition which requires me to take medication so that I don't get either too hyper or too depressed to the point of suicide," he said.
