One Direction wins big at VMAs

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- British boy band One Direction won a leading three MTV Video Music Awards at a ceremony in Los Angeles.

The pop stars went home with the trophies for Best New Artist, as well as Best Pop Video and Most Share-Worthy Video for "What Makes You Beautiful."

Rihanna earned Thursday night's top prize of Video of the Year for "We Found Love" featuring Calvin Harris.

Chris Brown won two VMA Moonmen for Best Male Video and Best Choreography for "Turn up the Music."

Tying Brown with two wins for the night was M.I.A., who picked up the prizes for Best Direction and Best Cinematography for "Bad Girls."

Kevin Hart served as host of the Staples Center event, which featured performances by Rihanna, Frank Ocean, Taylor Swift, Alicia Keys, Lil Wayne, P!nk, Green Day, One Direction, 2 Chainz and Calvin Harris.
