'The Help' takes top Image Awards honors

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- The box-office hit "The Help" won for best film along with two acting awards at the 43rd NAACP Image Awards in Los Angeles.

Viola Davis won lead actress and Octavia Spencer won supporting actress at the awards show Friday, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The Image Awards ceremony, held at the Shrine Auditorium, featured a tribute to the late Whitney Houston by gospel singer Yolanda Adams.

Romantic comedy "Jumping the Broom" earned the male acting awards, with Laz Alonso taking home winning lead actor and Mike Epps winning supporting actor. Salim Akil took home best director for the film.

In television, "Tyler Perry's House of Payne" won best comedy series and "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" took home the best drama series award.
