Hackers hit NBC Twitter with hijack hoax

NEW YORK, Sept. 10 (UPI) -- An apparent hacker ring claimed credit for messages sent out on the NBC News Twitter feed announcing a plane had crashed into New York's Ground Zero.

A follow-up message from a group calling itself the Script Kiddies quickly claimed credit for the fabrications, but NBC had to send out tweets through its other Twitter feeds Friday announcing the news of the supposed attacks was a hoax.

"NBC News's Twitter account has been attacked. NBC News is not reporting hijackings or attacks on Ground Zero," said one of the messages from NBC in Washington.

The Los Angeles Times said Twitter stepped in and shut down the Script Kiddies account. The NBC News account, which lists 112,000 followers, was also suspended for a period but was back online by Friday night.
