Letterman jokes off jihad threat

NEW YORK, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- David Letterman returned to his New York show from a two-week hiatus using jokes and his Top 10 list to respond to a jihadist's Internet death threats.

Last week while Letterman was on vacation, Islamic jihadist Umar al-Basrawi made an online post calling for Letterman's tongue to be cut out and his neck slit for past jokes about the death of an al-Qaida operative killed in June by a U.S. drone, Time magazine reported.

Although not naming names, Letterman said he had a lot of people annoyed at him.

"I wish I had a nickel for every time a guy has threatened to cut [my tongue out]," Letterman joked in his monologue.

Actually, the only name he did mention was Jay Leno whom he joked was responsible for the threat.

Letterman's Monday opened his night monologue expressing his gratitude for the people there that evening noting with people out to get him the audience was "more like a human shield."

The FBI says they are investigating Umar al-Basrawi, who allegedly contributes frequently to the al-Qaida recruiting site, Shumuka al-Islam, Time reported.
