Start date set for 'Titanic' miniseries

LOS ANGELES, April 15 (UPI) -- ABC says production on its four-part miniseries "Titanic" is to begin next month in Budapest, Hungary.

Created by Nigel Stafford Clark and Julian Fellowes, the miniseries will premiere in the United States on ABC and on ITV in the United Kingdom.

It is to begin shooting May 9.

"Titanic" is described in a synopsis as "an extraordinary re-telling of the doomed voyage that cleverly weaves action, mystery and romantic plots and features both fictional and historical characters, ranging from steerage passengers to upper-class guests, who come together in an explosive and unforgettable finale."

The miniseries will star Linus Roache, Geraldine Somerville, Noah Reid, Linda Kash, David Eisner, Celia Imrie, Toby Jones and Perdita Weeks. Jon Jones, whose credits include "Going Postal," "The Diary of Anne Frank" and "Northanger Abbey," is to direct "Titanic."

April 2012 marks the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the HMS Titanic on its maiden voyage. More than 1,500 people perished in the disaster.
