STOCKHOLM, Sweden, March 13 (UPI) -- Sweden's 2011 Melodifestivalen song contest was won by 20-year-old Helsingborg resident Eric Saade, a finalist in the 2010 event, organizers said.
Saturday's finals at the Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm was close, with Saade holding a slim two-point lead over a 2009 finalist named Danny, The Local reported.
But his lead grew to more than 40 points when the 1.32 million votes cast by Swedish television viewers were tallied.
"This is totally indescribable," Saade said. "I want to celebrate with the entire population of Sweden."
Danny made the 2009 finals as a member of boy band E.M.D.; Saade is an ex-member of the boy band What's Up.
Saade will represent Sweden at the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest in Dusseldorf, Germany, in May.
