Jazz musician Billy Taylor dead at 89

NEW YORK, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- Jazz musician Billy Taylor has died of a heart attack in a New York hospital, his family said Wednesday. He was 89.

Known as Dr. Taylor, the pianist and television personality grew up in Washington and moved to New York in the early 1940s, The Washington Post noted.

Throughout his storied career, Taylor performed alongside jazz titans Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and Art Tatum.

He served as host of the television series, "The Subject Is Jazz," as well as several radio programs, and was a frequent guest on "CBS Sunday Morning," the Post said.

Taylor also worked as the artistic adviser for jazz programming at the Kennedy Center and established the center's annual Women in Jazz Festival.
