Gene Shalit leaving 'Today'

NEW YORK, Nov. 9 (UPI) -- "Today" arts editor and critic Gene Shalit is leaving the morning TV program after more than 40 years, NBC announced Tuesday.

A tribute to the 85-year-old TV personality and his work is to air Thursday.

"Gene is not just a 'Today' show treasure, but a television legend and an American icon. We salute him for his unprecedented 40-year run on a single television program, a feat unlikely to ever be matched," "Today" executive producer Jim Bell said in a statement.
