Dogs offered for adoption at Williams play

KANSAS CITY, Kan., Nov. 2 (UPI) -- More than 70 dogs will be offered for adoption in Kansas during the run of "Sylvia," a canine-themed stage play starring Cindy Williams.

The Kansas City Star said Williams told the co-owners of the New Theatre Restaurant in Overland Park she wanted to combine her passion for rescuing animals with her acting job at their dinner theater since the play is about a stray dog.

"I floated it out in a conversation with Richard Carrothers," Williams, best known for her work on TV's "Laverne & Shirley," told the newspaper. "I said, 'Wouldn't it be something if we adopted a dog out after every performance?' and he jumped on it right away."

Starting when the show opens Nov. 11, a homeless dog from Animal Haven, a no-kill shelter in Merriam, will be introduced to the crowd, so audience members interested in adopting can do so, the Star said.
