LOS ANGELES, April 21 (UPI) -- Heather Locklear's attorney said she is looking into who was driving the U.S. actress's car at the time of an alleged hit-and-run involving a street sign.

A Ventura County Sheriff's department spokesman told People.com the former "Dynasty" and "Melrose Place" star was "technically arrested" on a misdemeanor charge Wednesday for allegedly hitting a no-parking sign in Ventura County, Calif., then leaving the scene without notifying authorities.

"She was not handcuffed or taken to a station because it was just a misdemeanor charge," sheriff's spokesman Ross Bonfiglio told People.com. "She was cooperative, but I can't give any information about any statements she made. She was cited and released. She signed a document stating she would make a court appearance."

"Ms. Locklear was cited with a misdemeanor traffic ticket as she is the registered owner of the vehicle. She was never taken into custody," Locklear's lawyer Blair Berk told the Web site. "The matter is still being looked into as it is not yet clear who was driving the vehicle."

The actress is due to appear in court May 17.

She was sentenced to a three-year probation term after pleading no contest to reckless driving in a separate case in September 2008.
