Dermot Mulroney is TV's new 'Rockford'

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 28 (UPI) -- NBC TV's new Jim Rockford will reportedly be played by Hollywood leading man Dermot Mulroney.

"House" creator David Shore and comedian Steve Carell are executive producers of the new version of the 1970s hit show, "Rockford Files," The Hollywood Reporter said.

Mulroney inherits the role from originator James Garner and will update Rockford as "slightly crumpled, wry humored, cynical, world weary, compassionate when it's called for and easily irritated by morons," The Reporter said.

Mulroney starred on the big screen in "Burn After Reading" and "My Best Friend's Wedding" and lit up the small screen in 2003 as a guest star on NBC's "Friends."

This marks his first starring role on television, The Reporter said.
