YouTube a major boost to New York artists

NEW YORK, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- Two New York hip-hop artists said they went from obscurity to appearing in TV commercials after posting clips of themselves on YouTube.

The New York Daily News said Sunday after rapper Christopher Dupree and violinist Joya Morris created multiple videos and posted them on the video-sharing Web site, they were recruited by talent scouts.

A Burrell Communications executive soon got the two New York residents spots in TV and radio commercials for McDonald's.

"I couldn't believe it," Dupree, 25, said of the instant fame.

"Never in a million years did I fathom that I'd be selling you McDonald's. Major artists don't get this opportunity."

The commercials were shot last month with Dupree's commercial displaying his rapping skills and Morris's featuring her playing the McDonald's theme on her violin while eating some of the restaurant chain's food.

"It's still surreal to me," Morris, 23, told the Daily News.

"I'm just appreciative that they'd want to use me in this. It's such a cute concept. I'm really proud of it."
