U.N. Women Goodwill Ambassador and Oscar-winning actress, Nicole Kidman (R) arrived on the red carpet with her country music star husband, Keith Urban. Kidman was honored as one of Glamour's Women of the Year and was introduced by famed director Sophia Coppola. As she accepted the award Kidman thanked her partner Keith, saying, "As much as I’m a strong woman, I need help and I need support.” The couple recently celebrated his 50th birthday.
Kidman also emphasized in her speech the need to make alliances across cultures in the women's movement, saying, "“I truly believe that we must share the good love that we receive whenever we see it’s needed,” she said. “It’s about building bridges, because bridges bring about new adventures and change, and that’s what we need—change.” Kidman won an Emmy this year for her performance as a domestic abuse victim in HBO's "Big Little Lies."
Honoree Gigi Hadid addressed the young women in the room and across the globe when she accepted her award, saying, "I want to let you know that just because I’m standing here, winning this award, doesn’t mean I have it all figured it out. If you don’t feel strong every day, that’s OK. That’s normal."
Models and sisters Bella (L) and Gigi (R) Hadid pose with their mother Yolanda Foster on the red carpet. The sisters are slated to return to the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in Shanghai, China, which will air later this month.
Serena Williams introduced her friend Gigi Hadid during the ceremony and spoke of her work ethic, saying, "She understands that in order to be the best, you have to think like you are the best, work the hardest and make sacrifices." Williams herself was honored in 2009 and this year won the Australian open while pregnant.
