Prince song 'Born 2 Die' released from posthumous album

June 3 (UPI) -- Prince's estate has released a new, previously unreleased song by the late singer.

"Born 2 Die," an unheard song by Prince, was released Thursday ahead of the singer's posthumous album Welcome 2 America.

Prince's estate said Prince recorded the song in the spring of 2010 as Prince reflected on issues facing Black Americans during President Barack Obama's first term.

Morris Hayes, who produced the song, said Prince drew inspiration from Curtis Mayfield.

"He had been watching videos of his friend Dr. Cornel West on YouTube, and during one speech Dr. West said, 'I love my brother Prince, but he's no Curtis Mayfield,'" Hayes said. "Prince said, 'Oh, really? We will see.'"

Welcome 2 America features 12 songs, including the title track, "Welcome 2 America," released in April.

The album "documents Prince's concerns, hopes, and visions for a shifting society, presciently foreshadowing an era of political division, disinformation and a renewed fight for racial justice."

Prince, who died of an accidental overdose at age 57 in April 2016, wrote and recorded Welcome to America prior to his 2010 tour of the same name.

Welcome 2 America is slated for release July 30. Prince's estate previously released the posthumous albums Piano and a Microphone 1983 (2018) and Originals (2019).
