Dec. 18 (UPI) -- South Korean singer Jonghyun is dead at age 27 of an apparent suicide.

The K-pop star, born Kim Jong-hyun, died at the hospital Monday after being discovered unconscious at an apartment in Seoul, according to The Korea Herald.

Jonghyun was rushed to the hospital in a state of cardiac arrest but pronounced dead after arrival. He was reportedly found with burning coal on a frying pan nearby, and police said they are investigating the death as a suspected suicide.

The Evening Standard reported Jonghyun's sister had called emergency services to say she feared the singer would attempt to kill himself.

"On December 18, 2017 at 4:42PM Jonghyun's older sister reported to police that her brother was about to commit suicide," Gangnam police confirmed.

"We went to his residence in Cheongdam and discovered that he had attempted to commit suicide," police said. "Emergency responders were with us at the time so we rushed him to Konkuk University Hospital in a state of cardiac arrest."

Jonghyun was best known as a member of the boy band SHINee, which last released the Japanese album Five in January. He also released the solo compilation album Story Op.2 in April.
