Elton John announces the death of his mother Sheila Farebrother

Dec. 5 (UPI) -- Pop music icon Elton John announced via Twitter his mother Sheila Farebrother has died at the age of 92.

"So sad to say that my mother passed away this morning. I only saw her last Monday and I am in shock. Travel safe Mum. Thank you for everything. I will miss you so much," John tweeted Monday, along with a photo of him and Farebrother smiling together.

The BBC said the 70-year-old singer recently reconciled with Farebrother after a nearly decade-long estrangement. John reportedly tried to pressure his mother into severing ties with Bob Halley and John Reid, two former employees with whom the entertainer had falling outs, but Farebrother refused.
