Nov. 16 (UPI) -- The 2017 Latin Grammy Awards opened with a moment of silence for Puerto Rico and a song performed by Puerto Rican recording artist, Residente.

Residente performed Hijos del Canaveral with other Puerto Rican musicians to honor the people whose island suffered extreme damage from Hurricane Maria, many of whom are still without electricity.

Residente began the night with nine Latin Grammy nominations, including a pre-show in for best urban album.

Puerto Rico saw more of their sons win early as Despacito, one of the biggest hit songs of 2017 and performed by Puerto Ricans Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, won three early awards for record of the year, best urban fusion performance for the remix with Justin Bieber and best short-form video.

Colombian pop star Juanes also made history Thursday after he won the award for best pop/rock album. The win gave him a total of 22 Latin Grammy awards.
