Sept. 14 (UPI) -- South Korean boy bands BTS and EXO took the top two spots on the Billboard Social 50 chart this week.

The recording artists became the first K-pop groups to concurrently rank No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, on the list dated Sept. 23, according to Billboard.

The Social 50 chart ranks the most popular artists on the leading social networking sites, according to the Billboard website. Popularity is determined by new followers, artist page views and song plays per week.

The Sept. 23 list marks BTS' 39th week at No. 1 on the Social 50 chart. The Korea Herald attributed EXO's surge from No. 10 to No. 2 to the recent release of the group's album The War: The Power of Music.

BTS has steadily gained international exposure this year, winning Top Social Artist at the Billboard Music Awards in May, and making a New York Times list of the most-watched acts on YouTube in the U.S. in August. The boy band will release a new album, Love Yourself 'Her,' on Sept. 18.
