Melissa Etheridge creates new song 'Pulse' to honor Orlando shooting victims

ORLANDO, Fla., June 16 (UPI) -- Melissa Etheridge has recorded a new song entitled "Pulse" to honor the victims of the Orlando shooting.

The title is a reference to the venue where the massacre occurred leaving 49 victims dead and another 53 injured.

"Everybody's got a pain inside/ Imaginary wounds they fight to hide/ How can I hate them, when everybody's got a pulse," the musician sings on the touching track.

In an interview with Rolling Stone about the song, Etheridge explained how she wrote the piece while on tour. "I'm dealing with it the way I deal, which is, I wrote a song. That's how I first started to cope because, as a singer songwriter, I feel very... I've done this before. I feel called to speak; to do what musicians do," she said.

"We've been the town criers for hundreds of years. We're mirrors of society. We want to try to make sense. We want to try to heal. We want to bring some meaning, some purpose. We also want to put it down forever in history. That's how I'm coping."

On Twitter Sunday, Etheridge mentioned working on a new song about the tragedy, tweeting, "From my window @FreedomTowerNY is lit up rainbow as I am writing a song...#Pulse #Loveislove #Orlando."

"Pulse" will soon be available for purchase with all proceeds going towards an LGBT charity.
