LOS ANGELES, April 22 (UPI) -- Blake Shelton said his first song with girlfriend Gwen Stefani, "Go Ahead and Break My Heart," reflects their "remarkable" bond.

The 39-year-old country star discussed the song and his relationship with the 46-year-old singer at The Voice's Karaoke for Charity event Thursday. Shelton collaborated with Stefani on the track for his new album, If I'm Honest.

"We were at a point where it's like, 'Do we want to go there? What will people think?'" Shelton told People magazine. "And then we finally just got to the point where it's like, 'You know what? I don't give a [expletive]."

"I love this song!" the star added. "This song's important to us and the fact that we wrote it together is so important to both of us."

Stefani announced the duet this week by sharing a photo of a mock-up for Shelton's new album, which is scheduled for release May 20. The picture revealed the singer would appear on Shelton's song "Go Ahead and Break My Heart."

"[The duet] is very personal for us both because, you know, we obviously have this bond that is remarkable together," Shelton told Entertainment Tonight. "I hesitate to brag on it too much but I really think that it's as good of a song as I've ever written in my life."

"I know that I don't co-write that much because I'm very insecure about it and I guess [Gwen's] kind of got her circle of people that she writes with," he shared. "But for us to reach out to each other as writers, it may never happen again, who knows."

Shelton and Stefani confirmed their relationship in November after splitting from their respective spouses, Miranda Lambert and Gavin Rossdale, in months previous. The couple initially met on NBC reality competition The Voice.
