National Health Service Choir wins England's Christmas No. 1 spot

LONDON, Dec. 26 (UPI) -- The Lewisham and Greenwich National Health Service Choir's "A Bridge Over You" has been voted England's Christmas No. 1 song, the BBC announced.

All proceeds from the sales of the record will benefit charities such as Carers U.K. and Mind.

"We are absolutely overwhelmed and couldn't be any happier," the group said in a statement released by the Official Charts Company. "It's a brilliant celebration for the NHS across the country, so, well done and thank you everyone for downloading and streaming. A massive cheer for the NHS, thank you."

The chorus of nurses, doctors and other medical workers beat out Justin Bieber and X Factor winner Louisa Johnson for the honor.

The song, which is a mash-up of Simon and Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and Coldplay's "Fix You," made it to the top of the chart after Bieber encouraged his 72 million Twitter followers to buy the charity single.

"Just heard the news. Amazing. That is what Christmas is all about. @Choir_NHS congrats! Very cool," he tweeted.
