LOS ANGELES, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- British singer-songwriter Sam Smith was named Best New Artist at the Grammy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles Sunday night.
The award was presented by Taylor Swift, who noted she lost in the same category when she was nominated in 2008. Swift then urged those who did not win this year to "Shake it Off," a nod to her hit song.
"I've got to try and say something now without crying. Thank you," Smith, 22, said as he collected his award. "Thank you to my amazing label. To my amazing management. ... To Capitol Records. ... Everyone there, I love you, and Mom and Dad... I won a Grammy! Thank you!"
LL Cool J hosted the Grammys ceremony, which kicked off with a medley of songs from heavy metal legend AC/DC.
