LOS ANGELES, Aug. 21 (UPI) -- Miley Cyrus will return to the MTV VMAs one year after making history at the awards show with her controversial performance alongside Robin Thicke.

A rep of the "Adore You" singer confirmed that Cyrus will be attending this year's event, which will take place in Los Angeles on Sunday.

This year, Cyrus is nominated for highest honor of the night -- Video of the Year -- for her emotional video for "Wrecking Ball." The other nominees are Beyoncé for "Drunk In Love," Iggy Azalea for "Fancy," Pharrell Williams for "Happy" and and Sia for "Chandelier."

Last year Cyrus left the show early, perhaps a few minutes after her performance, and sent out a tweet congratulating One Direction for winning an award that had yet to be announced.

Cyrus' "We Can't Stop" was also nominated for Song of The Summer, but the British boy band did end up taking the moonman for "Best Song Ever."

Jessie J, Nicki Minaj and Ariana Grande will open Sunday's VMAs with "Bang Bang." Beyoncé and Taylor Swift are also scheduled to perform at the event.
