LOS ANGELES, July 31 (UPI) -- It's been almost one year since Miley Cyrus made MTV-history at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, and this year, the network has decided to go for a slightly safer performer.

E! News reports that country star Taylor Swift has been tapped to perform at the annual award show, which will be held in California in late August.

While details of the "Red" singer's performance are being kept under wraps, sources say Swift is planning an "explosive" show.

Swift hasn't released any new music since her 2012 album, Red. Although it is unknown if she will perform a new track, sources say, "It's not a collaboration with another singer."

Other artists expected to perform at the event include Usher, Ariana Grande and 5 Seconds of Summer.

The 2014 MTV Video Music Awards will take place on August 24 at The Forum in Inglewood, Calif., at 9 p.m.
