LOS ANGELES, Feb. 14 (UPI) -- John Singleton is to direct a film about Tupac Shakur, a rap pioneer who died after a 1996 drive-by shooting in Las Vegas, Variety said Friday.

Singleton will rewrite the script, then direct and produce the bio-picture starting in June, the report said. Shakur's mother, Afeni, will be an executive producer on the project.

"Tupac was the guy who I planned to do a lifetime of films with," Singleton said. "His passing deeply affected my life as well as countless people in this world. His life story is as important to my generation."

No casting has been announced yet.
