'Lion King' roared atop the Broadway box office in 2013

NEW YORK, Jan. 3 (UPI) -- "The Lion King," the 16-year-old musical based on the classic animated Disney film, was the No. 1 Broadway box-office show in 2013.

The musical earned $97 million, Variety reported Thursday.

Coming in at No. 2 was "Wicked" with $95.3 million, followed by "The Book of Mormon" with $90.4 million at No. 3, "Kinky Boots" with $63 million at No. 4 and "Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark" with $57.2 million at No. 5.

Rounding out the top tier are "Motown" with $56.9 million at No. 6, "The Phantom of the Opera" with $52.2 million at No. 7, "Matilda" with $50.1 million at No. 8, "Cinderella" with $45.8 million at No. 9 and Jersey Boys" with $45.6 million at No. 10.
