Randy Travis hospitalized in critical condition in Texas

LOS ANGELES, July 8 (UPI) -- Award-winning U.S. country music performer Randy Travis was hospitalized in critical condition Monday with a heart infection, his representative said.

Travis spokesman Kirt Webster said in a statement the 54-year-old singer was admitted Sunday a hospital somewhere in Texas, "suffering from complications of recently acquired viral cardiomyopathy," CNN reported.

Travis, known for hits such as "Three Wooden Crosses," "Forever and Ever, Amen," and "Diggin' Up Bones," is on probation after pleading guilty to driving while intoxicated following a car crash last summer, People magazine noted. He also had other run-ins with the law last year involving alcohol and an alleged assault, CNN said.

CNN said Travis has been on tour, performing in Detroit and Chicago the last weekend of June. He had a concert scheduled for Wednesday in Deadwood, S.D.

Webster told the news network Travis appeared well during business meetings Friday and Saturday. "Then on Sunday, it hit him," the spokesman said.
