George Strait's father John dead at 91

SAN ANTONIO, June 5 (UPI) -- John Strait, the father of U.S. country music star George Strait, has died after a monthlong hospitalization, his family said.

The math teacher and rancher was 91 when he died Tuesday, the San Antonio Express-News reported Wednesday. The exact cause and location of his death were not reported.

"We are grateful for the time over the last few weeks we were able to spend with Daddy before he passed away," George Strait said in a statement. "I want to thank everyone for their prayers and support during this difficult time as we mourn our family's loss."

A private funeral service is scheduled for Thursday, the newspaper said.
