Revival of musical 'Pippin' up for 11 Outer Critics Circle Awards

NEW YORK, April 22 (UPI) -- The Broadway revival of the musical "Pippin" was nominated for a leading 11 Outer Critics Circle Awards in New York Monday.

"Kinky Boots" earned nine nods, while "Chaplin: The Musical" and "Cinderella" grabbed six; Golden Boy" and "The Nance" garnered five; and Dogfight" and "Matilda the Musical" racked up four.

Nominated for Outstanding New Broadway Play are "Grace," "Lucky Guy," "The Nance," "The Testament of Mary" and "Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike."

In the running for Outstanding New Broadway Musical are "Chaplin: The Musical," "A Christmas Story," "Hands on a Hardbody," "Kinky Boots" and "Matilda the Musical."

Shortlisted for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Play are "Bad Jews," "Cock," "My Name is Asher Lev," "Really Really" and "The Whale."

The nominees for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Play are "February House," "Dogfight," "Giant," "Here Lies Love" and "Murder Ballad."

Up for Outstanding Revival of a Play on Broadway or Off-Broadway are "Golden Boy," "Orphans," "The Piano Lesson," "The Trip to Bountiful" and "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?"

Contenders for Outstanding Revival of a Musical are "Annie," "Cinderella," "The Mystery of Edwin Drood," "Passion" and "Pippin."

Recognized in the Outstanding Actor in a Play category are Tom Hanks for "Lucky Guy," Shuler Hensley for "The Whale," Nathan Lane for "The Nance," Tracy Letts for "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" and David Hyde Pierce for "Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike."

Nominated for Outstanding Actress in a Play are Tracee Chimo for "Bad Jews," Amy Morton for "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?," Vanessa Redgrave for "The Revisionist," Joely Richardson for "Ivanov" and Cicely Tyson for "The Trip to Bountiful."

Shortlisted for Outstanding Actor in a Musical are Bertie Carvel for "Matilda the Musical," Santino Fontana for "Cinderella," Rob McClure for "Chaplin: The Musical," Billy Porter for "Kinky Boots" and Matthew James Thomas for "Pippin."

Vying for the prize for Outstanding Actress in a Musical are Lilla Crawford for "Annie," Valisia LeKae for "Motown: The Musical," Lindsay Mendez for "Dogfight," Patina Miller for "Pippin" and Laura Osnes for "Cinderella."

The nominees for Outstanding Solo Performance are Bette Midler for "I'll Eat You Last," Martin Moran for "All the Rage," Fiona Shaw for "The Testament of Mary," Holland Taylor for "Ann" and Michael Urie for "Buyer & Cellar."
