LONDON, March 24 (UPI) -- Venerable pop star Engelbert Humperdinck says his skill and experience will prove to be an advantage in this year's Eurovision talent contest.
Humperdinck, 76, was tabbed by the BBC to represent Great Britain in the annual event, which The Daily Telegraph described Saturday as a "campfest" featuring the best in off-the-wall entertainers from around Europe.
The ageless crooner told The Telegraph he was taking Eurovision seriously and would do well against his less-seasoned rivals.
"I've done concerts all over the world playing to different nationalities, which of course I'll be doing on this particular occasion," he said. "I think it's going to give me an edge in knowing what to do."
Humperdinck may be on to something. The Telegraph said the organizers of Eurovision, which will be held May 26 in Baku, Azerbaijan, have him booked to go on first, which is bound to make a splash given Humperdinck's reputation for drawing female fans who throw undergarments on stage.
But the master himself modestly urged his devotees to try to control themselves.
"I just want to be judged for my talent and the portrayal of the song," he said.
