LOS ANGELES, Feb. 10 (UPI) -- Pop icon Madonna says she "wasn't happy" after rapper M.I.A. flipped her middle finger at a camera during the Super Bowl halftime show in Indianapolis.

The NFL and NBC immediately apologized for M.I.A.'s behavior and for the network's failure to keep it off of television.

Madonna called in to Ryan Seacrest's KIIS-FM radio show Friday to give her perspective on the incident.

"I didn't know about it until I left. I was really surprised. I didn't know anything about it," Madonna told Seacrest.

"I wasn't happy about it. I understand it's punk rock and everything, but to me there was such a feeling of love and good energy, and positivity. It seemed negative. It's one of those things, it's such a teenager, irrelevant thing to do. … There was such a feeling of love and unity there. What was the point? It was just out of place," she said.
