LOS ANGELES, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- British rock guitarist Tony Iommi is in the early stages of lymphoma, said a message posted on Black Sabbath's Web site Monday.

"His band-mates would like everyone to send positive vibes to the guitarist at this time," the posting said. "Iommi is currently working with his doctors to establish the best treatment plan -- the 'Iron Man' of Rock & Roll remains upbeat and determined to make a full and successful recovery."

The news comes as Iommi, Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward were writing and recording their first new album together in 33 years in Los Angeles. The musicians said they are now heading to England to work with Iommi, 63, as he undergoes treatment.

The band said it still expects to release the as-yet-untitled CD this fall.
