Marital split jeopardizes Sonic Youth

NEW YORK, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- A spokesman for Sonic Youth says the U.S. band will complete its tour of South America next month despite the pending divorce of two founding members.

Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore announced they would split up after 27 years of marriage, leaving the landmark alternative band's future in doubt once their November tour is completed.

"Musicians Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore, married in 1984, are announcing they have separated," said a statement from the band's record label, Matador Records. "Sonic Youth, with both Kim and Thurston involved, will proceed with its South American tour dates in November. Plans beyond that tour are uncertain."

Gordon, 58, and Moore, 53, have a 17-year-old daughter, Coco.

The band itself has performed steadily since the 1980s and its most recent album, 2009's "The Eternal" earned a four-star review in Rolling Stone for its psychedelic guitar work and "proudly pretentious belief in rock as art."
