Country star Johnnie Wright dead at 97

NASHVILLE, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- Country music star Johnnie Wright has died at his home in Madison, Tenn., his family said. He was 97.

The (Nashville) Tennessean confirmed his death Tuesday, but did not say what the cause was.

Wright was a successful solo artist, who was also famous for being half the music duo Johnnie & Jack with Jack Anglin. He was the husband of singer Kitty Wells for more than seven decades, as well, the newspaper noted.

Among his hits were "Ashes of Love," "Poison Love," "Cryin' Heart Blues," "(Oh Baby Mine) I Get So Lonely," "Hello Vietnam" and "Stop the World (And Let Me Off)."

Wright and Wells performed until they were in their 80s and had three children together. Their oldest, Ruby, died in 2009 at age 70.
