Broadway's Alice Playten dead at 63

NEW YORK, July 6 (UPI) -- Broadway actress Alice Playten has died in New York of heart failure, complicated by both pancreatic cancer and diabetes, her representatives said.

She was 63 when she died June 25 at Sloan Kettering hospital in Manhattan, it was announced Tuesday. Her longtime husband, Joshua White, was at her side.

During a career that spanned more than 50 years, she starred in the original Broadway production of "Gypsy" and earned a Tony Award nomination for her work in "Henry, Sweet Henry."

Her other stage credits include "Caroline, or Change," "Seussical," "Rumors," "Spoils of War," "Hello, Dolly!" and "Oliver!" She also had a supporting role in the fantasy film "Legend" opposite Tom Cruise and Tim Curry.
